He has a particular focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD and combined profiles, and is known for a structured, evidence-based approach that prioritises clear outcomes, practical recommendations and high-quality patient experience.

Dr Achuthan obtained his MBBS in Malaysia and completed his consultancy training in General Adult Psychiatry in the United Kingdom. He has continued to build a broad academic and professional portfolio that spans both clinical and management domains, combining specialist psychiatric expertise with formal leadership training to support service quality, governance and system-level improvement.

He has held senior leadership posts within large independent mental health organisations, including Deputy Regional Medical Director and Medical Director roles. These posts reflect a strong track record in clinical leadership, multidisciplinary working, and maintaining high standards of care across complex services.

Alongside organisational leadership, Dr Achuthan is actively involved in professional and regulatory-facing work. He serves as Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists South West Division and as Chair of an approvals panel relating to Section 12 and Approved Clinicians. Dr Achuthan’s specialist interests are centred on neurodevelopmental psychiatry. He is trained in ADOS-2 and ADI-R and has extensive experience delivering ASD and ADHD assessments, including complex and overlapping presentations and co-existing mental health needs. His approach is formulation-led and aims to help individuals and families understand not only diagnostic conclusions, but also the wider context that can shape symptoms, coping and functioning over time.

He is also an author, with three books now published and a fourth currently in progress (What is Trauma?). His writing reflects a long-standing commitment to improving understanding of autism and ADHD, including cross-cultural considerations in adult assessment, and making clinically grounded information more accessible.
