Dr Benji Waterhouse Bio

Dr Benji Waterhouse is a Consultant Psychiatrist with more than 15 years’ experience working in the NHS. He studied medicine at Leeds Medical School and also obtained a First Class Honours degree in Medical Ethics. He completed his psychiatric training in London and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Adult Psychiatry in 2021.

Since becoming a consultant, Benji has worked across a range of NHS services including emergency psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, crisis services and community mental health teams across several major London NHS trusts. He has extensive experience assessing and treating depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, ADHD, psychosis, bipolar disorder and personality disorders.

Alongside his clinical work, Benji writes and speaks widely on mental health. His work has featured in the Guardian, Independent, BBC and Sky News.

His debut book, You Don’t Have to Be Mad to Work Here: A Psychiatrist’s Life, published by Penguin was an instant Sunday Times bestseller, has been translated into twelve languages, and is currently being adapted for television by BBC Studios. It is now a set text at several UK medical schools to help teach empathy to future doctors. His work exploring the intersection of medicine, storytelling and mental health led to him being named one of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ “Inspiring Psychiatrists”.

Benji believes that good psychiatry is as much about understanding people as it is about understanding diagnoses. He listens carefully and builds a full picture of a person’s life before considering what might help. Whether that involves medication, therapy, lifestyle changes or a different way of conceptualising a problem, his aim is to offer thoughtful, compassionate and evidence-based support which is likely to actually help.

The Guardian wrote that Benji possesses “that essential trait of all good doctors: a sincere and lasting tenderness for his flawed and frail, crude and complicated, broken and brilliant fellow human beings.”
