For More Information

What is an adult autism assessment?
An adult autism assessment is a detailed evaluation that looks at whether you meet the diagnostic criteria for autism. It is designed to give you a clearer understanding of your neurodivergent profile, including how autism may affect your day-to-day life, relationships, work and study.
This assessment is suitable for adults who have long-standing questions about possible autism, including differences in social communication, sensory processing, routines, flexibility or emotional regulation. It can also be helpful for those who feel they have masked traits for many years or want greater clarity about their experiences.
Assessments are carried out by experienced neurodevelopmental clinicians with expertise in adult autism and wider mental health. The assessment process follows recognised diagnostic standards and considers your presentation carefully and thoroughly.
The in-person assessment is a structured process rather than a single appointment. It may include a developmental and life-history interview, self-report questionnaires, supporting information from someone who knows you well where available, and a review of any relevant background information.
The in-person adult autism assessment lasts 90 minutes. This forms part of a wider assessment process that also includes pre-assessment review and the preparation of your diagnostic report.
Yes. The assessment looks at your developmental history as well as your current experiences. This may include school, work, relationships, sensory experiences, routines, communication and everyday functioning.
No. Questionnaires may form part of the process, but they are only one element of a full clinical assessment. Your clinician will also carry out a detailed interview and consider your wider history, current presentation and any co-occurring difficulties before reaching any conclusions.
The assessment looks at areas such as social communication, flexibility of thinking, sensory processing, routines, relationships, daily living and emotional wellbeing. It may also consider whether other factors, such as ADHD, anxiety, depression or trauma, could be relevant.
After the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive report explaining whether you meet the criteria for autism. The report is designed to be clear and practical, helping you understand how your profile may affect different areas of life.
Yes. The report can help support conversations with universities and disability services. It may be useful when requesting support such as Disabled Students’ Allowance, teaching adjustments, exam support, mentoring or other practical provisions.
Yes. The report can support conversations with employers, HR teams, occupational health and other services about reasonable adjustments. It may help explain how autism affects communication, sensory demands, working patterns and other aspects of working life.
Yes. The report includes practical recommendations tailored to your needs. These may relate to work, university, daily life and wider support, so you have clearer guidance on possible next steps.
The assessment carefully considers whether other factors may also be relevant, such as ADHD, anxiety, depression or burnout. Where appropriate, further assessment may be recommended to help build a fuller picture.
Yes. Follow-up appointments can help you understand the outcome of the assessment, think through next steps, and consider how you may want to use the diagnosis in different areas of life.
Yes. An in-person appointment can be helpful for adults who prefer face-to-face discussion or feel more comfortable being assessed in person.
Yes.
Yes. ADHD Health Clinic is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). This means the clinic is required to meet established standards for safety, quality of care and clinical governance in England.
